Case Study: Bearing Seal

Challenge

Issue:

The client was looking to were service a broken down trailer from Drake Trailers. The client was urgently looking to replace a deteriorating wheel dolley, bearing seal that was supplied by Rothe Erde Bearing which has past its seal life span. This is mostly due to abrasion caused by contamination/ debris and also the standard wear and tear.

Eventually all seals fail due to wear, however, excessive load, vibration or force can cause it to wear out long before it should.

Solution

Oz Seals machined up a custom bearing seal with an internal diameter of 1 Metre to Reid Engineering & Earthmoving. The custom bearing seal was manufactured from Oz Super Polymer which is a triple, lubricated polyurethane. The material maximizes elasticity and is effective in fast operating cycles.

As the clients trailer are always on rough road conditions and terrains, the chosen material for the custom wiper was an excellent choice as Super polymers have excellent temperature characteristics and have proven itself in tough application situations that would require superior materials and unique seal profiles .

Additionally, as all seals that are manufactured from Oz Seals have been proven to have a longer life span, 2-10 times more, as compared to average quality seals which only lasts for 3-6 years.

Results

Client Reported:

  • Oz Seals successfully manufactured a custom bearing seal with a large dimension.
  • Has no breakdowns since the seal replacement, It has increased productivity and reduced maintenance costs.
  • Currently, the bearing seal has been performing well and remain maintenance free.
